Asphalt Emulsion Tank

These Thermo-Guard® vertical storage tanks are designed for storing emulsified asphalt. The tanks have a single compartment and include electric elements on the bottom of the tank for heating. The tanks include controls that can be set by the plant operator to maintain the emulsion stored in the tank at a preset temperature. Tanks are available in numerous configurations and with numerous options. Sizes range from 6,000 gallon to 35,000 gallon capacity.

Insulation
Tanks are fully insulated. The top and sides have 6 inches of fiberglass insulation. The inside bottom of the tanks have 3 inches of foamglass insulation, which is protected by a metal plate.

Electric Elements
Thermo-Guard emulsion tanks use 18–44 kw electric heating elements (depending on tank size). Heating elements are designed for watt density of 3 watts per square inch to provide fast heat without damage to your emulsion. A dial thermometer is installed in the side of the tank for temperature indication.

Special Models for State & County DOTs
Heatec offers two special models that are specifically designed for state Departments of Transportation and county road departments. These models feature electric heating and are mounted on vertical supports to facilitate gravity-fed offloading. These models are available in 6,000 gallon and 10,000 gallon capacities.

Controls
Controls are housed in a control panel that meets NEMA 4 requirements to keep out windblown dust and rain, splashing water & hose-directed water. The panels are manufactured and tested by Heatec at its factory in Chattanooga, TN.

Mixing
Tanks are available with optional mixers to keep your material in proper suspension. The number, size, pitch, location and rotational speed of the impeller blades are key factors in maintaining mixture consistency. Moreover, the baffle and piping are carefully arranged to keep material from hugging the tank wall and to minimize stagnation zones.

Overflow Protection
The tanks incorporate a float and proximity switch to prevent overflow when filling the tank. When liquid in the tank reaches a predetermined level it raises a float and activates the proximity switch. This proximity switch is designed to be wired to the unloading pump used to fill the emulsion tank. Therefore, when the switch is activated it shuts off the unloading pump to prevent accidental overflow.

Shell and Skin
The tank shell is made from 1/4-inch thick A-36 steel plate. The shell has one bottom head and two top heads separated by 6 inches of insulation. All shells are hydro-tested to ensure there are no leaks.

The outer skin is aluminum, requiring virtually no maintenance. We offer skin in an embossed natural aluminum finish. We also offer the skin with a baked-on painted finish, either Astec ivory or Astec brown. Decals showing the Heatec name and logo are included. Other color finishes, stripes and decals with your name or logo are available by request.
